As the New Year rolls in, many people embrace the challenge of Dry January, a month-long commitment to abstaining from alcohol. I wholeheartedly applaud those who take this opportunity to recalibrate their relationship with drinking, prioritizing health, and mindfulness. It’s a commendable choice. The booze will wait for February.
For those looking to savor a drink while keeping the alcohol content in check, choosing beverages with a low proof or ABV (alcohol by volume) is an excellent option. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore a variety of delightful liqueurs, which often feature a more modest alcohol content while offering rich flavors and enticing aromas. Indulge in vermouth, a fortified wine you can enjoy neat or as a refreshing apéritif, or try Amaro, an herbal liqueur known for its complex and bittersweet profile. These choices allow you to enjoy a sophisticated sip with no need for full-strength liquors.
You might already know that I am a big fan of these categories and included many of them in my 2024 Favorite’s Round-Up.
Here is a short list of some liqueurs that I am sipping on this winter:
Sorel Liqueur: a gorgeous velvety spiced liqueur with ginger and nutmeg-forward flavors with a heavenly mouthfeel. There is truly nothing like it on the market.
Fast Penny Amaricano Rossa: rich, earthy, and creamy with an excellent balance of bitter & sweet.
As Above, So Below Aradia: this complex Amaro is a killer explosion of flavors that offers an unmatched herbal journey.
Cocchi Americano: a classic made from Moscato d’Asti grapes fortified with alcohol and macerated with botanicals. With citrus-driven flavors of lemon peel, chamomile, and black tea, this mouthwatering drink is perfect over ice.
Aquavit: drink like the Norse and kick back this caraway-infused spirit. Not all aquavit is low proof, but several on the market come in under 80 proof.
Enjoy a reverse Martini!
1.5 ounces dry vermouth (try Little City, Rockwell, or Lo-Fi)
1 ounce vodka or gin
1 dash orange bitters
Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir well. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a lemon peel.
As we embrace the spirit of mindful sipping this winter, there’s no need to sacrifice enjoyment for moderation. Whether you choose low proof spirits, a non-alcoholic beverage, or a refreshing twist on a classic cocktail, each glass is an opportunity to savor rich flavors and engage in meaningful moments with friends.
Cheers!
